Untitled (Sisyphus’ Treadmill) 2009
Treadmill, computer, wood, custom switch, headphones, audio. 0.7m x 0.5m x 0.3ms.

The running floor of a manual treadmill is pushed up against a wall, sans support handrails, using the blank white wall as a surface to push off. The viewer stands on the running platform and uses the manual treadmill as normal, that is, using their own momentum to keep the running surface moving. The piece also utilises audio, played back through headphones, the playback speed of the audio depending on the speed of the walker on the treadmill.

Heard through the headphones are the voices of strangers sharing with you the answers to ‘what they would ultimately want to be’. It proves difficult to keep a steady rhythm in order to hear the audio at the correct pitch and speed in order to understand what is being said, as adjustments are constantly made as the speed fluctuates
